Evansville – Cody Hess has officially taken on the challenge of becoming the fifth head coach in the history of Mater Dei High School football. Announced on Friday, Hess brings a unique familiarity to the program, having both played as a star running back and served on the coaching staff for 12 seasons. As a 2012 graduate, he is stepping into the role with excitement and a commitment to continuing the school’s esteemed football tradition.

“It means a lot to have that responsibility and opportunity to continue that rich tradition,” Hess stated. “Not only on the football field but in the classroom and community.” He emphasized his approach to not only focus on Friday night games but also maintain strong communication and teamwork within the coaching staff.

Since its inception in 1949, Mater Dei has had only four head coaches, with the most recent being Mike Goebel, a Hall of Famer who retired in December after a remarkable 28-year tenure that culminated in 270 wins. Goebel’s legacy includes two state championships and notable achievements that solidified him as a local sports icon.

Hess, who once held the record for the most career rushing yards at the school with 5,220, is expected to bring his passion and experience to the program. He was an All-State player in his final year and also contributed to the school’s baseball team reaching the state finals.

Sam Fleming, the athletics director, expressed enthusiasm for Hess’s appointment: “Cody’s passion for football, leadership, and commitment to our mission make him the perfect choice to lead our football program,” he noted, looking forward to ongoing success under Hess.

Mater Dei has an impressive record, having only two losing seasons since 1993 and a total of 24 sectional championships. The Wildcats have been competitive in state title games, recently winning in 2000 and 2022. As Hess takes the helm, he aims to uphold the high standards set by his predecessors. “Having the opportunity to join staff with him and coach on the sidelines with him, you learn so much,” said Hess reflecting on his time with Goebel.

In the 2022 season, Mater Dei recorded a solid outcome of seven wins against three losses and returns with strong talent for the upcoming season. Notable returning players include All-State running back Caden Thacker, All-SIAC quarterback Tate Mallory, and All-SIAC linebacker Jackie Ford. Hess is aware of the competitive landscape of the SIAC, stating, “We know that we’re going to face a great opponent every Friday night. There is no easy game in the SIAC.”

As Mater Dei looks to change its fortunes and reclaim the SIAC championship, fans and players alike are eager to see how Hess’s leadership will shape the team’s future on the field.
