Perry Township High School Football Program Welcomes New Head Coach Spencer Leno

Perry Township is welcoming a new face to its high school football program as the district has announced the hiring of Spencer Leno as the new head coach for the Perry Panthers. This decision is awaiting board approval and comes after the previous coach, Zach Slates, was let go following a 16-28 record over four seasons.

Perry athletic director Kevin Yoder expressed enthusiasm about the hire in a recent press release. “After an extensive search and careful consideration, we are thrilled to welcome Spencer Leno as our new Head Football Coach. Coach Leno brings not only a wealth of experience but also a deep commitment to developing well-rounded student-athletes,” Yoder said. He praised Leno’s passion for the sport and his focus on establishing a fulfilling environment for the players.

Leno, a 2009 graduate of Massillon Washington High School, was a notable player during his time with the Tigers. Following high school, he continued his football career at Wittenberg University. Before returning to Massillon in 2018, Leno gained coaching experience at Columbus Westland and Urbana high schools. Most recently, he served as the defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach for the Massillon football team.

In his acceptance statement, Leno conveyed his gratitude and excitement for the opportunity to coach at Perry High School. “It is with tremendous honor and gratitude that I accept the opportunity to be the next Head Football Coach at Perry High School. I look forward to joining this tight-knit community that prides itself on toughness, discipline, and hard work.” He emphasized his commitment to understanding and maximizing each student’s potential both on the field and in the classroom.

Leno and his wife, Abby, reside in Massillon with their three daughters: Raegan, Rowan, and Tatum. The first step towards his official appointment will be discussed during the Perry Local Schools’ board of education meeting scheduled for February 20.
