Washington Commanders Offensive Coordinator Kliff Kingsbury to Return Next Season
In Washington, D.C., the Commanders are poised for another season with offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury at the helm. Reports indicate that Kingsbury has decided to stay with the team, opting out of potential interviews with the New Orleans Saints for their head coaching position. This choice comes as the Commanders finished strong, making a push to the NFC Championship Game and showcasing a powerful offense.
Although the Saints showed interest in interviewing Kingsbury, he declined all offers while Washington was still in the playoff hunt. His decision to remain with the Commanders isn’t surprising, considering the challenging circumstances the Saints face. With a disappointing 5-12 record this past season and a significant salary cap issue, New Orleans is currently over the cap by $50.2 million. Many view this as one of the least appealing head coaching openings available this winter.
The Saints do hold the No. 9 overall pick in the upcoming draft, along with additional selections, which could allow them to rebuild. However, they will need to make important decisions regarding their roster to improve their situation.
On the other hand, Kingsbury’s return to Washington means he will continue working with impressive young talent such as Jayden Daniels. The Commanders had one of the best offenses in the NFL last season, and if they maintain their momentum, Kingsbury could find himself back in the head coaching market soon.
Kingsbury’s previous head coaching stints include Texas Tech and the Arizona Cardinals. While he recorded just one playoff appearance with Arizona, the team showed steady improvement during his early years there. Kingsbury also has experience working with dynamic quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes and Kyler Murray.
His experience and success in revitalizing Washington’s offense position him well for the future. As long as the Commanders continue to excel, Kingsbury will likely become a coveted candidate in the 2026 coaching cycle.
