In Connecticut, the announcement of the 92nd New Haven Register All-State Football Team brought excitement as standout players from various high schools were recognized for their impressive performances in the 2023 season. Compiled by sports experts, the team showcases athletes who excelled both offensively and defensively.
Leading the offense was Quarterback Nick Conlan from West Haven. Over his senior season, Conlan completed 113 of 219 passes, achieving a remarkable 2,105 yards and 23 touchdowns. His dual-threat ability also saw him rush for 943 yards with 10 touchdowns. This performance was highlighted by a streak where he threw for 610 yards and nine touchdowns without an interception in just three games.
The running backs list featured Hayden Allard of Killingly, who had an outstanding season leading his team to a fifth CIAC championship. Allard tallied 2,117 rushing yards and 42 touchdowns. John Manning from Windsor also shone, finishing with 1,765 yards and 25 touchdowns while helping his team reach the championship game. Another notable is Quintez Whittle from Ansonia, who secured 2,656 yards and 36 touchdowns, showcasing his prowess throughout the season.
On the receiving front, Andrew Esposito from New Canaan turned heads with 57 catches for 1,014 yards and 15 touchdowns, key to his team’s success. Joining him was Shane Walker of Masuk, who amassed 1,453 yards and 21 touchdowns, proving to be a reliable threat on the field.
The honor roll didn’t stop there as the defensive lineup included star talents like Kadear Dembele from West Haven, who led the defensive line with 74 total tackles and 15.5 sacks, while Mason Frey from Fairfield Prep collected an impressive 148 tackles. The honors continued as coaches were also recognized, with Joe Della Vecchia of St. Joseph earning Coach of the Year for leading his team to the championship against tough odds.
