Maxx Crosby Reflects on Texas High School Football Culture
Las Vegas, NV – In a recent episode of Julian Edelman’s ‘Games with Names’ podcast, Maxx Crosby, the defensive end for the Las Vegas Raiders, opened up about his high school football days in Texas. Crosby, who played for the Colleyville Heritage Panthers, described the overwhelming atmosphere of high school football in the Lone Star State as a major culture shock compared to his experience in Michigan.
“I moved to Texas, and it was like holy (expletive),” Crosby shared, reminiscing about his time in high school. He played in the 6A division, which is the highest level, and he recalled games drawing crowds of 15,000 fans. “The whole parking lot was tailgating, and it was crazy. I mean, the environment was like nothing I’ve ever seen,” he added. The contrast was stark when he later attended Eastern Michigan, where he noted that the attendance at his college games paled in comparison to his high school days.
High school football in Texas is renowned for its immense support, and Crosby’s description is backed by the impressive stadiums that can rival those of small colleges. These structures come with significant construction costs, and championship games are often held at AT&T Stadium, which seats 80,000 and is home to the Dallas Cowboys.
Crosby had a solid high school career, racking up notable stats. In his junior year, he recorded 41 tackles, one sack, and a fumble recovery, earning Second-Team All-District honors. The following year, he improved with 62 tackles, six sacks, five passes defended, and two fumble recoveries, earning All-Area and All-District selection.
Despite his achievements, Crosby was only offered a scholarship from Eastern Michigan, which he accepted. His college career led to recognition as a two-time First Team All-Mid-American Conference member, ultimately catching the eye of the Raiders who selected him in 2019. Since joining the NFL, Crosby has become a two-time Second-Team All-Pro, but he emphasizes that the thrill of Texas high school football is an unforgettable experience for him.
