Beaverton School District Settles $50,000 Lawsuit Over Alleged Misconduct at Football Camp

In Beaverton, the Beaverton School District has reached a settlement of $50,000 regarding a lawsuit brought forth by the mother of a Westview High School football player. The lawsuit stems from an incident that occurred during a summer sports camp in June 2024, where the player, currently a senior, reported that he was suddenly awakened in the middle of the night and slapped in the face by his coach.

This unsettling incident took place while the team was attending an overnight camp at Linfield University in McMinnville. According to court documents, around a dozen teenagers were present when their coach, Jamal Jones, allegedly engaged in inappropriate behavior such as slapping and grabbing players as they slept.

The situation escalated at around 1 a.m. when players were reportedly frightened by Coach Jones’ actions. This prompted many of the campers to gather their belongings and leave the gym where they were staying. During the police investigation, Jones admitted to drinking four beers prior to the events, which adds another layer of concern regarding his actions in this situation.

The resolution of this case aims to address the wrongs experienced by these young athletes, leading to the financial settlement for the affected player’s mother. It is a reminder of the importance of safety and appropriate behavior in youth sports environments.

As this story continues to unfold, the focus remains on the well-being of student-athletes and ensuring that their experiences during sports training remain positive and safe.
