Brighton High School Coach Stephen Lian Nominated for Don Shula NFL High School Coach of the Year Award

Brighton, NY – Coach Stephen Lian of Brighton High School has received notable recognition as the Buffalo Bills’ nominee for the Don Shula NFL High School Football Coach of the Year award. This award honors high school coaches who demonstrate the integrity and leadership exemplified by the late Don Shula, the winningest coach in NFL history.

Under Lian’s guidance, the Brighton Bruins achieved a remarkable season, finishing with a 12-1 record, marking the most wins in a single season for the program. Additionally, the Bruins won both their first-ever Sectional Championship and Far West Regional Championship.

“It’s very humbling knowing that there are so few that are nominated each year,” Lian remarked. Despite his joy in receiving the nomination, he emphasized that the success belongs to the entire coaching staff. “It’s definitely a full staff effort. I want to give a lot of thanks to my coaching staff,” he said.

Lian has not only set a high standard in coaching but also made history as the first Asian American head coach to win the Section V championship. This achievement holds significant meaning for him, particularly as he reflects on setting an inspiring example for his children. “It is very meaningful for me,” he stated. “For them to see that their dad was able to do this is very special.”

Central to Lian’s coaching philosophy is the motto, “The Strength of the Pack,” which emphasizes teamwork and community involvement. “Everything we do is around how each individual can help the Pack as a whole,” he explained. Lian also values family, cherishing the experience of coaching his son and having his youngest child serve as a waterboy for the team.

Lian and the Bruins are dedicated to making a positive impact in the Brighton community, utilizing their platform beyond just football. He fosters an environment where players prioritize their education alongside their sports commitments. Every player receives a college recruitment manual to assist them in potentially pursuing college football.

Another priority for Lian is concussion safety. Through a partnership with the University of Rochester, players are educated on injury prevention, and safety measures are in place. Every athlete wears Guardian Caps during practices. Lian stated, “We want to be on the forefront of anything we can do to help, and not only concussions but really, any kind of injury prevention.”

As Coach Lian reflects on the season, he sees it as a culmination of the efforts of past players and families, attributing the triumphs to their faith in the program. His leadership not only embraces the essence of sportsmanship and integrity but also creates a legacy well beyond the football field.
