Exciting Day at the UIL High School Football State Championships in Arlington

Arlington was buzzing Friday as the UIL high school football state championships continued at AT&T Stadium. Just under 45,000 fans filled the stands to witness three thrilling games that shaped the future of Texas football.

In the Class 4A Division II championship, Carthage claimed their 10th state title by overpowering Waco La Vega with a score of 28-14. The Bulldogs, led by the exceptional coaching of Scott Surratt, pulled away during the second half. This victory places Carthage second all-time in UIL titles, just behind Aledo, which has 12. Qb Jett Surratt connected with Junior Henderson for two crucial touchdowns in the fourth quarter, while Kelwin “KJ” Edwards dominated on the ground with 188 yards and two first-half touchdowns. The Bulldogs’ defense stood strong, limiting La Vega to just 208 total yards throughout the game.

In another showcase, Celina celebrated their 9th state title after defeating Kilgore 55-21. Coach Bill Elliott’s squad came back from an early deficit, showing their strength throughout the contest. Junior quarterback Bowe Bentley was stellar with 265 yards and 5 touchdowns, tying a state record. In a dominant performance, Bentley connected with teammates for multiple long touchdowns, including a breathtaking 63-yard pass. Celina’s defensive efforts were highlighted by the play of Luke Biagini, who contributed significantly on both sides of the ball.

The late game featured Richmond Randle taking the championship over Dallas South Oak Cliff in a nail-biting 38-35 finish. Randle’s Lions, in just their third year as a varsity program, achieved a remarkable upset against the reigning champions. The game was tightly contested, featuring four lead changes in the second half. The Lions sealed their victory after a spectacular 72-yard touchdown return by Sean Smith, kicking off the jubilant celebration as the clock ran out.
