In a spectacular display of high school football talent, Grayson emerged victorious in the Class 6A state title game, defeating Carrollton 38-24 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. This triumph marks Grayson’s first state title since 2020 and their fourth overall since 2011, reinforcing their status as one of Georgia’s premier football programs.
The game was a battle of wills with an impressive running game and a tough defense leading the Rams to victory. Grayson’s defense, spearheaded by five-star linebacker Tyler Atkinson, consistently pressured the highly-rated Carrollton quarterback, Julian Lewis. The Rams sacked Lewis four times and capitalized on two interceptions, creating crucial turnovers late in the match.
Grayson jumped to an early 10-0 lead, but Carrollton responded with two first-half touchdowns, putting them ahead 14-10. A subsequent field goal extended Carrollton’s lead to seven points. The Rams, currently on a winning streak of 13 games since an early season loss, showcased resilience when they managed to tie the game 17-17 with an impressive 93-yard touchdown drive capped by a two-yard run by running back Elijah Miller.
As the game progressed into the second half, Carrollton tied the game at 24-24. However, Grayson’s defense proved vital, limiting Carrollton’s offensive options and forcing them to attempt a 43-yard field goal – which ultimately hit the crossbar. Taking advantage of the opportunity, Grayson’s running game surged forward, leading to Miller’s second touchdown of the night, giving Grayson a 31-24 lead.
Despite Lewis moving his team back into Grayson’s territory, another interception put the Rams in a stronger position. This led to Miller’s 25-yard rushing touchdown, extending their lead to 38-24. With the final moments winding down, Grayson’s defense seized another turnover, cementing their historic victory.
For Carrollton, this outcome was disappointing, particularly for a program renowned for its success, winning 253 games this century yet still seeking the elusive state title. Meanwhile, Lewis’s high school career concludes with impressive stats of over 10,000 passing yards and 144 touchdowns, leaving a significant mark on Georgia high school football.
