Pleasanton Celebrates Historic High School Football Championship
Pleasanton, Calif. – The tight-knit community of Pleasanton came together in a big way on Friday night as the Amador Valley High School football team played in its first-ever state championship game. The atmosphere was electric at the Sidetrack Bar + Grill, which hosted one of several watch parties for locals eager to support their team in the Division 3 AA State Championship.
The restaurant, often a gathering spot for locals, was packed with fans and former players, all sharing in the excitement of this historic moment for their high school. “I get to watch my brother play in the state championship. It’s a surreal moment for him,” said Matthew Foley, a recent graduate of Amador Valley. He added, “It’s awesome to have the whole community coming here.”
Community pride was evident as attendees cheered for the Dons, with comments highlighting the dedication of the student-athletes. Kelly French, an alum from the class of 1993, remarked, “They’re a great group. We’re proud. They’re representing all of Pleasanton.” Meanwhile, Kelly Cantu, the school attendance secretary, shared her support for the players, saying, “I know every child on that team, and they are the most amazing kids ever.”
The Dons faced off against a team from Bakersfield at a neutral site in Long Beach. For many who couldn’t make the trip, the watch party was a way to connect and support the team. “In the world today, with everything going on, it’s nice to have something simple and fun to support the kids,” said Todd Utikal, the owner of Sidetrack Bar + Grill.
As the game progressed, the hard work and effort put in by the players became a focal point for many in attendance. “The fact that hard work pays off in the classroom and on the field is important,” said Michael Jaramillo, a vice principal at the school. Even restaurant staff echoed similar sentiments, with Frankie McBain stating, “They made it to the state finals. It’s an incredible achievement. They should be proud of themselves.”
The Dons fought hard throughout the game, but ultimately fell to their opponents with a final score of 18-14. Upon returning home to Pleasanton on Saturday morning, the team was met with cheers and applause from community members, solidifying the outpouring of support and pride for their effort.
