Thrilling CIF State Championship Games Showcase High School Football Talent in Southern California

In Southern California, high school football teams competed fiercely on December 14 in the CIF State championship games. The action-packed day saw numerous thrilling matchups that kept fans on the edge of their seats.

In the **Open Division**, Mater Dei dominated De La Salle with a convincing final score of 37-15. This victory capped off a perfect season for Mater Dei, who finished with a record of 13-0 and are now likely in line to be named the national champion. Notable plays included a 31-yard touchdown pass from Dash Beierly to tight end Mark Bowman and a 15-yard touchdown run by running back Jordon Davison, which came after an impressive 16-play, 92-yard drive.

Over in Division 1-A, Edison claimed their first CIF state title by edging Fresno Central with a score of 21-14. The game was decided in dramatic fashion with a 54-yard touchdown pass from Sam Thomson to Jake Minter with just 20 seconds left on the clock.

Meanwhile, Palos Verdes had a remarkable showing in Division 2-A, winning their first state championship against Twelve Bridges with a score of 55-19. Sophomore quarterback Ryan Rakowski threw a remarkable 6 touchdown passes, matching a state record for a championship game.

In a nail-biting finish in Division 3-A, Vanden came out on top of Rio Hondo Prep with a final score of 42-41 in overtime. The game saw Vanden score first in OT but Rio Hondo Prep fell just short on a two-point conversion attempt.

Sonora made history in Division 4-A by winning their first state championship against St. Pius X-St. Matthias, finishing with a score of 52-34. The team ran for over 360 yards and secured five touchdowns throughout the game.

Finally, in Division 6-A, Arcata triumphed over Portola 27-21 in another overtime thriller. Portola fumbled on their possession in OT, allowing Arcata to drive down the field and clinch the win.
