Canton High School Football: Watterson Eagles and Olentangy Liberty Patriots Claim State Championships in Thrilling Finale

Canton, Ohio – The high school football season culminated in thrilling fashion last Friday at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium, as two central Ohio teams secured state championships. The Watterson Eagles and Olentangy Liberty Patriots both emerged victorious in their respective title games, concluding a season that began on August 1 with early practices.

The Watterson Eagles finished their season undefeated, claiming the Division III title with a hard-fought 19-14 victory over Toledo Central Catholic. This win was particularly sweet as it avenged a 27-7 loss the Eagles faced in the previous year’s state final. Watterson showcased their grit in the final moments, holding off Central Catholic with stellar defensive stops.

Quarterback Drew Bellisari was instrumental, completing a crucial 52-yard touchdown pass to Dominic Theado that saw Watterson tie the score at 14-14 in the fourth quarter. Although their extra-point attempt was blocked, Bellisari’s 9-yard touchdown run late in the game sealed the deal, allowing the Eagles to clinch their first title since 2010.

Meanwhile, the Olentangy Liberty Patriots celebrated their first state championship in program history after defeating Cincinnati Moeller 28-14. Liberty’s quarterback Andrew Leonard was outstanding, throwing for 272 yards and three touchdowns, all to standout receiver Christian Moulton. Leonard’s efficient play was marked by a stellar 17-of-23 passing performance that included zero turnovers.

The Patriots’ defense also made key plays, including a crucial stop on a fourth-and-1 that turned possession back over to Liberty. As the game progressed, Liberty maintained control, with key drives leading to a significant lead entering the fourth quarter. Moeller did find the end zone, but it was too late as Liberty capped off an impressive season with a win.

Both teams have shown tremendous resilience throughout their seasons, overcoming past challenges to achieve the glory of being state champions. Now, Watterson and Liberty will look forward to next season with their championship experiences to bolster their efforts.
