Lincoln of San Francisco Mustangs Win Historic Flag Football Championship
San Francisco celebrated a memorable victory as the Lincoln Mustangs finished their flag football season with a bang on Thanksgiving Day. The Mustangs, boasting a record of 9-1, triumphed over the Lowell Cardinals with a score of 12-2 in what was a historic game played at the famed Kezar Stadium. This matchup marked the first-ever San Francisco Section flag football championship, making the victory even more significant for the players.
In a fitting tribute to Turkey Day, Lincoln’s team showcased their talent and determination on the field. Senior Anya Tom and sophomore Kai’Veyh Robinson were the stars of the game, connecting for two long touchdowns. The game was especially sweet for the Mustangs, as they avenged a previous 21-0 loss to Lowell that had taken place earlier in November.
Robinson expressed their emotions saying, “We knew we were way better than we showed before. We had to bring it this game.” Tom echoed those sentiments, emphasizing the desire to perform at their best, “It was a huge (revenge factor), because the first game was not us.” Together, they made their presence known, combining for over 100 yards through five completions.
The game was significant not only for the players but also for the special occasion: the 100th anniversary of the Academic Athletic Association (AAA). Tom reflected on how meaningful it was to compete on such an important day, noting, “It was an absolute honor to be the first (girls flag football team) to do it on this day.”
The Mustangs’ defense played a crucial role in securing the win, particularly junior Janeice Lopez, who made several pivotal plays against Lowell’s strong quarterback, Diamond Altamirano. After the Mustangs took a commanding lead, Lowell managed to score with an interception return, but it was not enough to turn the tide. With the clock winding down, Lincoln celebrated joyously post-practice, bringing a sense of community and accomplishment to their Thanksgiving celebrations.
As the players and coaching staff reveled in their championship win, Robinson remarked, “Definitely, Thanksgiving dinner will taste better after the win.” The Mustangs’ win will undoubtedly be remembered for years and reinforce the growth of flag football as an exciting and competitive sport for young athletes.
