Atlanta Set to Host Historic College Football Playoff
Atlanta is gearing up for a big moment in college football as the 2024-25 College Football Playoff (CFP) marks a new era for the sport with its 12-team format. This significant change comes after a decade of the four-team playoff system, which culminated with the Michigan Wolverines claiming the national title last season.
The CFP National Championship Game is set for Monday, January 20, 2025, at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium. This year’s schedule features playoff games starting from December 20, 2024, allowing teams a higher chance to compete for the coveted title. The first round of games will take place on December 20-21, followed by the quarterfinals on December 31-January 1, and the semifinals on January 9-10.
Last season, the Michigan Wolverines proved their dominance in the CFP, wrapping up a perfect 15-0 season. They defeated Washington 34-13 in the championship game, marking Michigan’s first national title since 1997. Quarterback J.J. McCarthy performed remarkably, throwing for 140 yards and showcasing his speed with a vital 22-yard run on a critical third down during the game. Standout performances continued with defensive back Will Johnson earning the Defensive MVP award after making a game-changing interception. Meanwhile, running back Blake Corum took home the Offensive MVP title with a record-breaking performance, rushing for 134 yards and scoring two touchdowns.
Head coach Jim Harbaugh celebrated the victory as the first national championship in his nine years with the Wolverines. He reflected on the achievement, emphasizing that the “business is finished” after achieving the ultimate goal.
With the CFP expanding and a full schedule on the horizon, college football fans can expect an exciting season and a thrilling playoff experience ahead.
