UNLV Rebels Quarterback Matthew Sluka and Running Back Michael Allen Opt to Redshirt for 2024 Season

LAS VEGAS – In a notable turn of events, two players from the UNLV Rebels football team, quarterback Matthew Sluka and running back Michael Allen, announced on Wednesday that they will redshirt for the remainder of the 2024 college football season. This decision comes despite the Rebels sitting at a perfect 3-0 record and holding the No. 23 spot in the US LBM Coaches Poll.

Sluka and Allen have both participated in three games this season but are opting to sit out the remainder of the games to preserve their eligibility for future seasons. Fortunately, since neither has played in more than four games, this year will not affect their standing with the NCAA.

Sluka, who transferred to UNLV from Holy Cross, expressed his feelings on the matter, stating, “I have decided to utilize my redshirt year and will not be playing in any additional games this season.” He mentioned that his choice was influenced by disagreements regarding commitments made when he enrolled in UNLV, which he felt were not realized after joining the team.

In his three appearances this season, Sluka completed 21 of 48 passes, accumulating 318 yards, six touchdowns, and one interception. Meanwhile, Allen has contributed to the Rebels’ strong start to the season. With the NCAA transfer portal set to open on December 9, both players will have the opportunity to explore new options for their football careers.

Understanding the redshirt rule in college football is important for players considering similar paths. Redshirting allows athletes to avoid competition in a season while still keeping a year of eligibility intact. The rules have evolved since 2018, when athletes are now permitted to play in up to four games within a season without losing redshirt status. This adjustment has provided players valuable experience while allowing them to plan ahead for their collegiate careers.

The Rebels will continue their season, and despite the loss of Sluka and Allen, the focus remains on their strong performance and showing support for their teammates as they pursue further success this year.
