Virginia High School Football Rankings Shake Up After Week of Games

As the 2024 Virginia high school football season gets rolling, teams across the state are finding their footing. The latest updates from the On3 Massey Ratings reveal a lot of movement in the rankings after exciting games on the field. As of September 11, 15 teams have changed positions, showing just how competitive this season is shaping up to be.

Leading the pack is the Freedom Eagles, who will kick off their season on September 27 against the Gar-Field Red Wolves. While they haven’t played yet, they are still considered the top team in Virginia, thanks to standout players like wide receiver Carleton Preston and running back Jeff Overton. The Eagles rank first in offense and second in defense in the state.

Following closely is the Phoebus Phantoms, who started strong with a 23-7 win over Highland Springs. They displayed solid performance while gaining 281 yards in offense. The Phantoms aim to continue their success with upcoming games against Woodside on September 12 and Heritage on September 20.

Third place belongs to the Commodores, who managed to secure a close victory against the Wise Pumas. The team’s defense has shown promise by limiting opponents to just 14 points per game, thanks to key defenders like Ari Watford and Isaiah Simmons.

The Liberty Christian Bulldogs are also making waves, moving up a spot to fourth after a convincing 35-21 win over Salem. Running back Gideon Davidson played a pivotal role in leading his team to victory.

Meanwhile, the Madison Warhawks dropped one spot to fifth despite winning their first two games, showcasing their ability to score rapidly against their opponents, notably securing a 17-0 shutout against Stone Bridge.

The Highland Springs Springers experienced a setback after losing to Phoebus, but they still hold the title for the best defense, conceding an average of 11.5 points per game across their matches. Meanwhile, the Oscar Smith Tigers showcased offensive firepower with impressive wins, including a 44-6 beatdown of Hermitage.

There’s still plenty of time for teams to rise up in the rankings as the season progresses. With tough matchups ahead, fans can expect another round of thrilling games that may change the landscape of Virginia high school football.
