Casa Grande High School Football Game Marred by Violence

Casa Grande, Ariz. – A high school football game turned chaotic on Friday, August 30, as fights broke out among fans, leaving empty bleachers at the new season’s opener. The Casa Grande High Cougars faced off against Tempe’s Corona Del Sol High School and ultimately secured a stunning victory with a score of 52 to 44. However, the win was overshadowed by the disorder that erupted off the field.

According to police reports, the incidents began in the stands and were fueled by personal disputes among the fans, which included a 34-year-old woman and a 15-year-old who were both taken into custody. As tensions escalated, police had to step in, removing fans to ensure the safety of players and bystanders alike. The situation grew chaotic, with mentions of an officer sustaining minor injuries and at least one child being impacted during the skirmish.

Casa Grande Union High School District Superintendent Jeff Lavender expressed his disappointment over the events. “There was no celebrating Friday night,” he commented, emphasizing that the turmoil should not reflect negatively on the school or the community. “These were Casa Grande residents that got involved in it. This was not about the opponents; this was about our own fans and the conflicts between them.”

The superintendent acknowledged that security measures had been in place but were not sufficient in preventing the altercation. “We will learn from this, we will get better, and come see our football team play. Let them be the story, not what happened Friday night,” he stated, highlighting that the Cougar football team consists of honorable student-athletes. The district is set to host a community forum on Tuesday, September 10, to discuss ways to enhance safety and improve future games.

As the community moves forward, Lavender encourages everyone to rally behind the team and support the young athletes who deserve recognition for their hard work on the field.
