Tragic Death of High School Quarterback Caden Tellier Leaves Selma Community in Mourning

Selma, Alabama is currently in a state of mourning following the tragic death of a local high school quarterback, Caden Tellier. The 16-year-old player suffered a serious brain injury during John T. Morgan Academy’s season-opening football game against Southern Academy on Friday night. After being critically injured, he was transported to a hospital, but sadly, his passing was confirmed the following day, according to statements released by school officials and Caden’s family.

This unfortunate event has left the community heartbroken. Caden’s parents expressed their sorrow, stating, “Our boy, Caden Tellier has met Jesus face to face. Everyone who knows Caden has known kindness, generosity and love.” They highlighted Caden’s spirit by saying he is “giving of himself one more time” as he was an organ donor.

Reports suggest that Caden suffered a ruptured blood vessel in his brain after a routine play during the game where he was tackled and made contact with the ground. Michael McLendon, Executive Director of the Alabama Independent School Association, mentioned that initial observations from the game indicated that the crowd did not witness anything unusual during the play.

Deaths during football games, while tragic, are considered rare across all levels. In 2023, there were 16 recorded deaths among football players, including seven in high schools, according to the National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury Research. Among these, three were linked to traumatic brain injuries that occurred during games.

The headmaster of John T. Morgan Academy, Bryan Oliver, described Caden as a “shining light” who was adored by his peers. In remembrance, the school has suspended all activities for the week and held a time of prayer for students and parents. Caden’s father, Jamie Tellier, who also serves as an assistant coach, reflected on his son’s passion for the game and his love for sharing his faith.

A Go Fund Me campaign has been launched to assist the Tellier family with medical and related expenses, quickly achieving over $85,000 in contributions. Community members are also coming together to support one another through this painful time, with local pastors and grief counselors offering their assistance.
