Tragic Death of Morgan Academy Quarterback Caden Tellier Sparks Community Mourning and Investigation

SELMA, AL – A tragic event unfolded over the weekend as 16-year-old Morgan Academy quarterback Caden Tellier died on Saturday, just one day after sustaining life-threatening injuries during a football game. The incident occurred in the third quarter of a matchup against Southern Academy in Selma. Reports state that Tellier was injured while being tackled after carrying the ball.

According to headmaster Bryan Oliver, Tellier suffered a brain injury and was immediately transported to the University of Alabama at Birmingham hospital. Sadly, despite medical efforts, Tellier’s family announced his passing on social media, sharing their grief and appreciation for the community’s support. “Our boy, Caden Tellier has met Jesus face to face,” they wrote. “Everyone who knows Caden has known kindness, generosity and love.” They also mentioned how Tellier would continue to impact lives through organ donation.

According to the Alabama Independent School Association Executive Director, Michael McClendon, it is thought that Caden suffered a ruptured blood vessel in his brain during what seemed to be a typical play. He noted that details about the specifics of the injury are still being gathered, and the investigation could take some time.

Oliver also expressed the school’s deep sorrow on their Facebook page, highlighting Tellier as a “shining light” within the Morgan Academy community. “There are no words to describe how we feel,” said Oliver. He emphasized that Tellier will always be remembered for his spirit and contributions to the school.

Tellier was not just known for his football talent; he was also a dedicated baseball player at the academy. This incident adds to a grim trend, as it follows the deaths of other young athletes in Alabama, including a 14-year-old who collapsed during practice. In response to this recent tragedy, Morgan Academy has decided to cancel all sports activities for the upcoming week, including a scheduled game against Wilcox Academy.
