Rochester High School Golf Teams Get Ready to Swing into Action
Rochester is all abuzz as the local high school golf teams prepare for what promises to be an exciting season. With fresh faces, seasoned players, and coaching shifts, there’s plenty to talk about. Each team is gearing up to compete and enhance their games in a season full of potential.
Golfing Giants: Lourdes Boys’ Team
Leading the charge for Lourdes is Head Coach Jake Waldman, along with Assistant Coach Jeff Fritzjunker. Last season found the team finishing 7th in the Hiawatha Valley League, missing out on the final round of the Section 1-2A meet, but they held their heads high, coming in 4th at the Rochester All-City Invitational. This year, all eyes are on Colton Rich, the reigning Post Bulletin Boys Golfer of the Year. As a senior and former Section 1, Class 2A medalist, Colton boasts an impressive scoring average of 74.39. Last year, he placed 4th in the section meet and returned from state ranked 7th!
Colton is currently ranked No. 13 by the Minnesota Golf Association in its first all-class individual state rankings. But the competition is fierce! Junior Owen Hoehn and sophomores Gavin Groettum, Charlie Kor, and Michael Norman all eye the top spots, especially since they share a background playing hockey together with Rich. However, the team said goodbye to three players: Tommy Karau, Jack Bowron, and Eric Nelson, leaving room for emerging talent.
Mayo High School: Champs in the Making
Switching gears to Mayo, we have Head Coach Gunnar Olson, assisted by Pat Franko and Brandon Brown. After snagging the title of Section 1, Class 3A champions, they placed 7th at the Class 3A state meet and triumphed at the Rochester All-City Invitational. This year, senior Tim Sexton, the defending Section 1-3A medalist, leads a team that is poised for victory.
Will Gyarmaty, a junior who played a pivotal role in last year’s championship run, is back to support the squad, along with senior Isaac Ahn, heading to Harvard post-graduation. Sexton currently stands at No. 17 and Ahn at No. 31 in the Minnesota Golf Association’s latest rankings. Coach Olson is focused on fostering growth and competitor’s spirit throughout the season.
Century High School: A Balanced Approach
Next up, we have Century with Head Coach Lance Dahl and Assistant Coach Tim O’Neill. After a strong showing, tying for 3rd in the Section 1, Class 3A meet and coming in as the runner-up at the Rochester All-City Invitational, they’re ready for a competitive season. Returning with varsity experience are five golfers, including seniors Ryker Hansen and Kaine Severson, alongside junior Brennan Weckwerth, who was the section runner-up. Weckwerth opens the season with a ranking of No. 51.
Century’s roster not only showcases experienced players but also promising newcomers, hinting at a balanced approach to this season.
Rockets in the Mix
The Rockets, coached by Scott Glandon with the help of Kaysie Otterness, went through a phase of learning last season but still fought hard, finishing 3rd at the Rochester All-City Invitational. With a comprehensive roster of 20 players, they feature six seniors, including Alex Beck, Brock Clarey, and Drew Glandon, among others. Clarey, ranked No. 97 in the state, and Glandon, who led with an 81.8 scoring average, are both ready to step up.
The Girls Take Center Stage
On the girls’ side, Coach Deanna Deutsch leads the Lourdes team, supported by Brittany Ellena. Coming off a 5th place finish in the Hiawatha Valley League, they’re ready to make strides this year after placing 3rd at the Rochester All-City Invitational. The returning junior Kendell Powell and sophomore Paige Moeschler will lead the charge along with 8th grader Allison Deutsch.
Meanwhile, at Mayo, Coach Karen Kolbet and her team of assistants are eager to build on their past successes. The team finished 4th at Section 1-3A and won the Rochester All-City Invitational. Featuring strong players like junior Flora Bolster and freshman Dylan Raukar, they are determined to improve and foster respect for the game.
Following closely, Century’s girls team under Eric Kartheiser struggled last season but aims to bounce back this year. They did finish 4th at the Rochester All-City Invitational, hoping the experience learned from the previous season pays off.
The Rochester JM girls, coached by Kelsey Stenzel, are ready to make their mark with veteran players like the Bogenrief sisters—Claire and Cate, along with Ashtyn Krenke and Esmae Miller, who have honed their skills and aim for a successful season.
With all this budding talent and determined coaching staff, Rochester’s high school golf teams are surely set for a thrilling and competitive season ahead.
