Salida’s Girls’ Golf Team Shines at Tri-Peaks Regional Tournament!
What a fantastic day for the Salida High School girls’ golf team! They took the course by storm at the Tri-Peaks Regional Tournament held at the beautiful La Junta Golf Club on April 2nd. With a total score of 246, this talented group has clinched the first place, leaving their competitors in awe.
This tournament is just the first of three for the Tri-Peaks league, with the overall winners only being crowned after all three competitions have wrapped up. But for now, the Salida girls are riding high on their early success!
In a showdown against tough rivals, St. Mary’s secured the second position with a score of 313, while Vanguard took third with a close 318. The competition was fierce, but the Salida team displayed a remarkable performance that showcased their determination and skill.
Coach Russ Johnson couldn’t have been prouder of how the girls performed, as three out of the four players achieved personal bests during the tournament—a thrilling accomplishment for the team. Leading the charge was senior Kyndra Johnson, who won the individual competition with an impressive score of two under par at 70. While she didn’t hit her personal best, her performance certainly set the tone for the team.
Meanwhile, fellow senior Kaelin Martellaro turned heads with her personal best score of 84, which was enough to grab third place overall. Hot on her heels was senior Emma Trollip, who also shone bright, achieving a personal best of 92 and finishing in a strong fifth. Junior Charlotte Meakim also showed her talent, recording a personal best with a score of 113, landing her in thirteenth place.
Coach Johnson noted that the team seemed more focused than in previous tournaments, which likely contributed to their success. Though spring golf often comes with its challenges, particularly the windy conditions that were present during the tournament, the Salida girls managed to navigate them effectively. Good teamwork and mental fortitude made all the difference on this day!
As the girls bask in their victory, Coach Tami Smith pointed out Meakim’s standout performance with the putter, praising how her “putts were on fire.” This emphasis on strong putting skills reflects the team’s overall strategy to enhance their game in the future.
Despite their triumph, it’s clear that there’s always room for improvement. Coach Johnson identified areas where the girls can work on their short game, chipping, and putting as they gear up for their next challenge. Weather has been a bit of a thorn in their side, disrupting practice sessions and affecting access to their home course. But these committed athletes are driven and prepared to overcome these hurdles.
Mark the calendars, folks! The Salida High School girls’ golf team is set to tee off again at the Patty Jewett Golf Course in Colorado Springs on April 8th. With their sights set on continued improvement and another shot at victory, these talented golfers are ready to take on whatever comes next. Stay tuned for more exciting news!
