This past Saturday, the boys and girls track and field teams from Piedra Vista High School put on quite the show at the Turner Invitational, which was held right on their home turf. Under the clear blue sky, excitement buzzed in the air as athletes dashed, jumped, and threw their way to impressive victories.

Boys Team Brings Home the Championship

The boys team showcased some incredible talent, clinching the top team title in the competition. With stiff competition from Farmington, Kirtland Central, and Bloomfield, the Piedra Vista boys rose to the occasion, defeating a total of eight teams to claim their victory. Their hard work and determination certainly paid off!

The standout star for the boys was Robert Hess, who blazed through the 100-meter dash with a fantastic time of 11.5 seconds. He left his rival, Noah Warner from Kirtland Central, in the dust, who finished with a time of 11.69 seconds. It was a thrilling race that had spectators cheering in delight!

Another name to remember is Spencer Womack, who not only won the boys triple jump with a fantastic leap of 42 feet, 10 inches but also led his teammates to a stunning 1-2 finish in the high jump. Womack soared to an impressive height of 6 feet, surpassing fellow Panther Reuban Marquez, who cleared an impressive 5 feet, 10 inches. The boys team was indeed a force to be reckoned with!

Girls Team Shines Bright

Not to be outdone, the girls team made waves at the Invitational too! Following the disappointment of the canceled Early Bird Invitational due to bad weather, this event was the much-awaited kickoff for many local teams. The girls performed impressively, showcasing their skills and determination on the track.

The standout performances included not one but two triumphant relay teams. The 4-by-100 meter relay team comprised of Brooklyn Johnson, Emmerson Schnell, Anna Araiza, and Aalysa Estrada sprinted to victory, finishing with a time of 52.47 seconds—beating their opponents from Aztec by over a second!

The excitement continued as the 4-by-200 meter relay team, featuring Araiza, Estrada, Ashlynn Mitchell, and Mikaela Donaldson, also claimed victory against Aztec with a time of 1:53.97. What a phenomenal showing by these young athletes!

Individual Highlights

And if that wasn’t enough, there were more personal victories on the field. Madison Etsitty excelled in the girls discus throw, dominating with a winning distance of 89 feet, 2 inches, comfortably ahead of the runner-up, Hailey Big from Navajo Prep, whose best throw measured 81 feet, 11 inches. What a remarkable accomplishment for Etsitty!

In total, the Piedra Vista girls team accumulated a score of 102.5 points, finishing ahead of Aztec, which scored 95 points. Bloomfield and Farmington rounded out the top four in this thrilling eight-team event. It was truly a day to remember, filled with smiles and high fives!
