Westlake High School Wolverines Claim Maryland 2A State Indoor Track and Field Championship

Greetings, sports fans! We’ve got exciting news coming from Waldorf, Maryland, where the Westlake High School Wolverines brought home the gold in a spectacular display of athletic prowess at the Maryland 2A State Indoor Track and Field Championship. The competition took place at the bustling Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex on February 21, and the Wolverines certainly left their mark!

Unstoppable Relays

What was the key to their major victory? It all boiled down to their impressive relay performances. The Westlake team dominated the track, clinching both the 800 relay and the 1,600 relay.

The 800 relay team, consisting of Kelechi Anyanwu, Noah Hospedales, David Nnabuko, and Christian Wilbon, blazed through the finish line with a time of 1:30.32, impressively ahead of their competitors. Not taking a breath, they capped off their triumphant day by also winning the 1,600 relay, where Anyanwu partnered with James Francis, Caleb Phillips, and Da’wuan Proctor to clock in at a swift 3:26.49. This excellent performance contributed significantly to Westlake’s overall score, leading them to a total of 58 points and securing the 2A state boys indoor title — a full ten points ahead of their closest rival, Middletown!

Individual Highlights Shine Bright

And it wasn’t just the relays that showcased outstanding talent. Kelechi Anyanwu also shone brightly in individual events, finishing second in the 500 meters with a solid time of 1:04.89 and taking third in the 300 meters with a speedy 35.02. Despite his impressive results, it was Hereford High School’s Ben Wheeler who managed to steal the show by winning both the 300 and 500 meters.

On another note, David Nnabuko displayed his speed and agility, securing third place in the 55 dash. His teammate, Chase Francis, also put on a commendable performance finishing seventh in the 55 hurdles. Clearly, Westlake’s athletes are not just great team players but also capable of standing out in their individual events.

A Proud Legacy Continues

The triumph reflects well on their dedicated coach, Adamo Murray, who has now amassed an impressive 17 state titles during his tenure with the Westlake program. His experience has undoubtedly paved the way for this latest victory, marking the team’s first indoor state title since 2016, following last spring’s outdoor triumph.

Additionally, the championships featured other thrilling performances. Athletes from Lackey High School swept the top three spots in the 2A boys’ shot put, with Mike Simmons delivering a remarkable throw of 52 feet, 5.25 inches to take the gold, followed closely by teammates Devin McNair and Koran Thomas who took second and third respectively. Meanwhile, La Plata junior Mekhi Prather blazed through the 55 meters to win gold in a speedy 6.39 seconds and also ran strong, ultimately finishing fourth in the 300 meters.

A Day for the Book!

All in all, it was a day filled with records broken and history made, as the Westlake Wolverines proved that teamwork, determination, and a dash of speed can take one a long way. The fans couldn’t be prouder, and we’re sure this victory will be remembered for years to come!
