Houston, Texas – The sporting world is in mourning as former LSU wide receiver Kyren Lacy has tragically passed away at the young age of 24. An official from LSU confirmed this sad news to CBS Sports on Sunday. The circumstances surrounding Lacy’s death involve a police call initially made for a disturbance where he allegedly fired a weapon into the ground during an argument.

When officers arrived on the scene, Lacy was reportedly not present, but they located his vehicle, leading to a police chase over several miles. The chase ended when Lacy’s car crashed. Upon approaching the vehicle, police discovered that he had died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

In a statement, an LSU spokesperson expressed, “We’re saddened to learn of the tragic passing of former LSU Football student-athlete Kyren Lacy.” The spokesperson went on to offer condolences to Lacy’s family, friends, and former teammates and coaches.

Before his untimely death, Lacy had a promising future ahead of him. He was once seen as a potential high NFL Draft pick. However, he faced legal troubles earlier this year, having been arrested and charged with several offenses including negligent homicide and felony hit-and-run following a fatal car crash in December 2022 that claimed the life of a 78-year-old man and injured two others.

Details from a Louisiana State Police release indicate that in that incident, Lacy was illegally passing other vehicles which led to a serious collision. After the crash, he fled the scene without assisting those involved.

Lacy’s football career included two seasons at Louisiana-Lafayette before he transferred to LSU, where he went on to become the Tigers’ leading receiver in 2024. Over his collegiate career, he recorded 162 catches for 2,360 yards and 26 touchdowns.

The loss of Kyren Lacy is felt deeply within the community, and he will be remembered for his contributions on the field and the impact he had on those around him.
