Welcome to the 2025 Montana High School Track and Field Season!
As the weather kept throwing some curveballs, Montana’s high school track and field athletes are still showing up, putting in the hard work, and hitting those all-important qualifying standards. Each year, all four high school classifications in Montana set qualifying marks that allow athletes to compete at state meets, which is an exciting opportunity for our young sports stars.
This season, if athletes meet or beat the qualifying standards at eligible meets, they can secure their spots at the state meets in Kalispell and Missoula, no matter where they finish in their district or divisional competitions. How great is that? Just imagine the thrill of knowing your hard work pays off, providing a chance to compete on the big stage!
Mark your calendars because the Class AA and Class A state meets will be in Kalispell on May 23-24, while our Class B and Class C state meets are taking place on the same days in beautiful Missoula. There’s going to be a lot of excitement in the air as athletes from all over showcase their talents.
Top Performers Steal the Spotlight
Now let’s dive into some of the standout performances we’ve seen so far this season! One name that’s certainly making waves is Hunter Loesch from Corvallis. This talented athlete has achieved a jaw-dropping throwing distance of 204 feet, 4 inches in the javelin, ranking as the second-longest throw in the nation this spring and the longest in Montana since 2019. Talk about setting the bar high!
Loesch has a strong track record (pun intended); he placed third at the Class A state meet in 2023 and second in 2024. Watching him continue to improve is sure to keep fans on the edge of their seats!
Another impressive competitor is Jack Murray from Gallatin, who holds the all-class record in the discus. This season, he has marked a fantastic throw of 168-03, solidifying his reputation as a top contender.
Then we have Astin Brown from Polson, who impressively recorded a shot put throw of 58-09 in two different meets. It looks like he will be a fierce competitor in the Class A category!
Reigning Champions Shine Bright
Over in Helena, Madilyn Todorovich is not just resting on her laurels. The reigning state champion in the 400-meter run, 300-meter hurdles, and high jump is shining this season. She’s currently leading the state with remarkable marks in the 400 meters at 59.32 seconds, 300 hurdles at 46.27, and high jump at 5-05. Add to that her personal-best long jump of 17-11½, and it’s clear she’s a force to be reckoned with!
Not to be outdone, Kaitlyn Noyes from Townsend and Ella Varner of Corvallis are also making headlines with their long jump performances. Noyes measured an impressive 17-08½, while Varner followed closely with 17-06. Noyes previously set a Class B record last spring with an astounding jump of 18-0½. Imagine the excitement those jumps bring!
Broadening the Numbers
Data shows that since April 7, various boys and girls have qualified across multiple events, from the 100 meters to the javelin and discus. This demonstrates the fierce athletic spirit and determination present in Montana’s high schools. With such diverse talent across classifications, it’s no wonder excitement is building for the upcoming state meets.
So, as we gear up for these thrilling events in May, let’s continue to cheer on our local athletes. With hard work, determination, and a bit of competitive spirit, they are sure to make us proud!
