Watoma Relays Canceled Again

In more somber news, the beloved Watoma Relays track and field meet has been canceled for a third consecutive year. This staple of the spring athletic calendar was set to take place on April 25, but ongoing construction at Allen Mitchell Field has once again put those plans on hold. The announcement regarding this cancellation came from the Watertown School District Activities Director, Craig Boyens.

The upgrade project at Allen Mitchell Field, which started after last year’s cancellation, is expected to wrap up in July. Once completed, the new amenities will feature a fantastic turf field, a resurfaced track, seating for 3,700 fans, improved press boxes, stadium lights, and upgraded facilities for bathrooms and concessions.

A Long Wait for Home Competitions

The Watoma track and field teams have been anxiously waiting to compete on their home turf since the last Watoma Relays back on April 22, 2022. Today, they’ll have to settle for a meet in Huron to kick off their outdoor season. Fingers crossed that next year brings better luck with the schedule!

Heartwarming Recovery Story

In a heartwarming twist, across the state lines in Iowa, an uplifting story has emerged from a recent high school track meet. A freshman athlete named Nate Bentley collapsed after finishing his leg of the sprint medley relay at Glenwood High School on Tuesday. This incident raises awareness about the importance of emergency preparedness in schools.

In response to this incident, a new bill is making its way through the Iowa legislature, aiming to make Cardiac Emergency Response Plans (CERPs) mandatory in schools to ensure the safety of student-athletes across the state.

Upcoming Competitions in Wyoming and Texas

Looking beyond our local teams, Wyoming’s high school track and field season is ramping up with eight track meets happening this week! Athletes are set to compete not only within the state but will also venture into nearby states such as Colorado, Nebraska, and Utah for additional competitions.
