Excitement Builds Midway Through the 2025 High School Track and Field Season in Salt Lake City

As the fine spring weather continues to grace us, track and field athletes from high schools across the state are racing into the spotlight, showcasing their incredible talents. Just five weeks into the 2025 high school track and field season, we’re already witnessing some outstanding performances that can only leave us in awe!

Record-Setting Performances on the Boys’ Side

Starting with the boys, let’s talk about some jaw-dropping records. Jerome Myles from Corner Canyon has really made waves this season! With a blistering 10.36 seconds in the 100 meters and an astonishing 20.84 seconds in the 200 meters, he’s setting a high bar for all aspiring sprinters. Both records were established last year, but it seems the competition this season is igniting a fire under the other athletes!

On the track longer than the sprinting events, Bank Jackson from Maple Mountain has claimed the 400 meters record at 46.05 seconds set last year as well. If you’re wondering about the 800 meters? The record stands proudly at 1:49.77 by Logan MacKay from Davis, achieved in 2016. What an inspiration!

And for those who enjoy a longer run, the boys’ 1,600 meters record previously held by Thomas Boyden from Skyline is currently 4:05.16, while the 3,200 meters record of 8:42.47 is held by Daniel Simmons from American Fork—if you can take your breath away during that endurance test, more power to you!

Relays and Jumps Making a Splash

Relays are where teamwork shines, and let’s not forget the boys’ 4×100 relay record of 40.68 seconds set by Corner Canyon in 2021. Meanwhile, the 4×200 relay record is standing tall at 1:24.61. And the 4×400 relay? That stands at a striking 3:12.49! One can hardly imagine the synergy it takes to achieve those times!

When it comes to field events, the boys are equally impressive. The long jump record rests at an astonishing 23′11.00 by Dominic Overby from West Jordan in 2024, while the boys’ pole vault record is set at 16′09 by Dallin Thornton from Bingham in 2022.

Girls Stepping Up Their Game

Shifting our gaze toward the girls, the competition is just as fiery! Leading the pack, Amare Harlan from Fremont has left her mark with both the 100 meters at 11.43 seconds and the 200 meters at 23.30 seconds, both achieving this in 2023. What incredible speed!

In the longer distances, the girls are also breaking records. The 800 meters record belongs to Lily Alder at 2:07.28, while Jane Hedengren from Timpview has outdone herself, setting records in the 1,600 meters at 4:37.72 and the 3,200 meters at 9:52.96. These times are nothing short of mind-boggling!

Relays and Throws to Impress

On the relay front, the girls’ 4×100 relay shines with a state record of 46.82 seconds from Corner Canyon. Meanwhile, the 4×200 relay record is held by Bingham at 1:37.74—the excitement as teams run shoulder-to-shoulder is electric!

In field events, notice Julie Waters’ impressive 6′1.25 in the high jump set back in 1981 that still stands strong. And the shot put record of 49′06.00 by Kelli Burton from Davis in 2002 is still unmatched!

Anticipation for What Lies Ahead

As we reach the halfway point of the season, the anticipation builds for what lies ahead. With so many phenomenal athletes on the verge of breaking records abound, the excitement in Salt Lake City is palpable! Keep watching, as these amazing young people continue to push boundaries and inspire us all, proving that hard work and determination truly lead to spectacular outcomes!
