Wellington High School’s Swim Team Swims into History with All-Girls Relay Team!

Wellington has always had a cozy spot in the hearts of many, and now, the local swim team is making waves that are sure to be remembered for years to come. The Wellington Sailfish summer league program has been splashing around for decades, and it’s finally time for the ladies to take the stage. In a historic moment, Wellington High School is proud to announce its very first all-girls relay team, making headlines as they compete fiercely this season!

It all started back in 2021 when Jensen Lynnes became the first swimmer from Wellington to join up with the Winfield swim team. Fast forward to 2025, and things are looking even brighter as a group of five girls has come together to represent their hometown with pride. This marks a crucial opportunity for Wellington, who has for the first time fielded a relay team composed entirely of girls from the 67152 zip code at the postseason.

Meet the Dynamic Swimmers

The 2025 Wellington swim team includes an exciting roster of talent:

  • Alara Wilson – sophomore, and the only returning swimmer from 2024.
  • Ellie McComb – a junior with plenty of enthusiasm.
  • Abby Ybarra – a talented freshman, representing the new generation.
  • Georgia Shinliver – another promising freshman, making her mark.
  • Sophie Cornejo – also a freshman, ready to swim her heart out.

Before the girls took the plunge, Wellington had seen its fair share of male swimmers, including notables like Rome Hunt and Ralph Cornejo swimming for the Winfield boys’ team. Now, the girls are here to show that they can compete too!

A Season of Competition

The Winfield/Wellington team kicked off the season strong, participating in two meets so far, including the Campus and Andover meets. The team made quite an impression, winning the Campus meet and finishing second at Andover! The excitement was palpable, especially with two of Wellington’s rising stars currently in contention to qualify for the prestigious Class 5-1A state meet, set to be held from May 22-24 at the magnificent Topeka-Capitol Federal Natatorium.

In high school swimming, the road to state isn’t easy; it requires swimmers to achieve a specific state qualifying time. If they fall short, there’s still hope, as the state can choose entrants based on the best “consideration times.”

Stars of the Show

Right now, Alara Wilson is making a splash, ranked 19th in the state for the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 27.93 seconds, and also 19th in the 100 freestyle at 1:02.15. Not far behind, Georgia Shinliver is turning heads with her state consideration time in the 100 fly and is presently ranked 22nd at 1:13.09. Both girls are just a heartbeat away from hitting those all-important state qualifying times!

It’s worth noting that Alara narrowly missed qualifying for state last year, finishing in 25th place in the 100 freestyle by just a whisker—only 0.02 seconds away! Talk about a narrow miss, right?

Performance Highlights

The results from the recent meets show the grit and determination of these young athletes. At the Andover meet on April 1, although they faced tough competition, they showed undeniable spirit and commitment:

  • Ellie McComb made solid attempts in both the 50 yard and 100 yard freestyle, though both were marked as DNP (Did Not Place).
  • Sophie Cornejo had some ups and downs with her performance across several events.
  • Georgia Shinliver finished respectably with a 12th place in the 200 yard free and a 6th place in the 100 yard free.
  • Alara Wilson stood out, finishing 6th in both the 50 free and 100 free, and even shined in the 200 free relay event.

In the Campus meet on March 25, the excitement was electrifying with Winfield-Wellington coming out on top with 466 points, while Campus trailed behind with 333 points. Alara and Georgia were among the top performers, showcasing their determination and readiness for state.

Looking Ahead

The future is looking bright for the Wellington High School swim team. With these incredible young ladies leading the way, not only have they made history, but they are also setting a strong foundation for future generations of swimmers. As they gear up for the state meet, supporters and fans alike will undoubtedly be cheering them on, proud of the remarkable journey the team has taken. Go Sailfish!
