Philomath Track and Field Teams Gear Up for Oregon Relays

Exciting times are ahead for the Philomath High School track and field teams as they prepare to represent their school at the much-anticipated Oregon Relays on April 4-5. The event will take place at the famous Hayward Field in Eugene, a location renowned for hosting elite track events. The first day of competitions kicks off at 10:30 a.m., with the second day starting bright and early at 9:30 a.m. Athletes from Philomath are eager to showcase their talents!

Fundraising Fun with Papa’s Pizza

Before they dash off to the relays, the team is planning a fun fundraising event at Papa’s Pizza in Corvallis on April 1. This is a great way for supporters to help fund the program while enjoying some delicious food. Patrons can make their purchases count by presenting a flyer, which will ensure that 50% of the food purchase goes directly to the track program. However, keep in mind that beverages and delivery orders aren’t included in this offer. If you’re thinking of gifting someone a meal, gift certificates bought on that day will also contribute to the team, bringing in 25% of their value.

And that’s not all! The atmosphere will be lively as The Root Vegetables, a band made up of Philomath High School track athletes, will be taking the stage at 6:30 p.m. Some of the key members of the band include the ever-energetic Emmett Murch, Galen Murch, Leo Pausch, and Cedric Petrovich, keeping the crowd entertained and synchronized with rhythm while supporting their fellow athletes!

Outstanding Performances at the Rob Frank Invitational

The Philomath athletes have already been making waves this season with impressive performances. At the recent Rob Frank Invitational, standout athlete Ellie Morton dominated the track by winning the 100 meters in a blazing 13.44 seconds and achieving a personal best of 15 feet, 4¾ inches in the long jump. Her contribution didn’t stop there—she also secured second place in the high jump at 4’8″, while helping her team clinch first in the 4×100 relay with a time of 51.41 seconds.

Another star of the meet was Anneka Steen, who triumphed in both the high jump (5’0″) and the triple jump (31’11”). She was also a key player in the 4×400 relay team that captured first place with a time of 4:17.8. The girls’ team thrived at this invitational, with a total of nine female athletes winning individual events!

The boys’ squad didn’t fall short either. Micah Matthews achieved victory in both the 110 hurdles (16.43 seconds) and high jump (5’10”). Warwick Bushnell sprinted to a first-place finish in the 200 meters with a time of 23.58 seconds and played a role in two second-place relay finishes. Additionally, Nixon Mooney celebrated a personal best of 52.22 seconds in the 400 meters, while Mateo Candanoza took the crown in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:18.1. All of these fantastic performances contributed to the team’s third-place finishes across several events during the invitational.

The momentum from the start of the season has been phenomenal as Philomath’s boys and girls teams both displayed impressive skills at the Elmira Relays. The boys secured their meet win with a tally of 85 points, while the girls finished a strong second with 67 points.
