Pavilion: Lander High School Shines at the Wind River Icebreaker Track Meet
This past weekend, the Wind River Icebreaker Track Meet took place at Wind River High School in the charming town of Pavilion. With a fantastic turnout of 14 teams, the competition was fierce yet friendly, with all athletes showing great spirit and determination.
The weather was quite pleasant in the morning, providing an ideal backdrop for the track and field events. However, as the clock struck 12:15 PM, the winds picked up a bit, adding an extra challenge for the athletes. But that didn’t stop the competitors from putting on a show of speed, agility, and strength!
Lander’s Dominance
In a stunning display of talent, Lander High School dominated the meet, emerging victoriously in both the girls’ and boys’ team standings. For the girls, Lander brought home 1st place with an impressive score of 114 points. Big Piney followed closely in 2nd place with 90 points, while Jackson secured 3rd place with 87 points. The top five was completed by Kemmerer at 67 points and Pinedale with 60 points.
On the boys’ side, Lander maintained their stride with yet another 1st place finish, amassing a remarkable 134 points. Big Piney again claimed 2nd place, finishing strong with 95.5 points. Following them were Kemmerer and Jackson securing 3rd and 4th places with scores of 85 and 83 points, respectively. Rounding out the top five was Saratoga with 58 points.
Highlighting the Top Performers
Throughout the meet, several young athletes showcased their talents across various events. In the girls’ 100 Meters, Micah Strong from Big Piney took home the gold with a blistering time of 12.96 seconds, while Abigail Lucas from Jackson finished 2nd in 13.67 seconds.
The girls’ 200 Meters also produced some fantastic times, with Vinaya Vanderploeg from Riverside grabbing first place in 28.02 seconds, closely followed by Lucas again, finishing just milliseconds behind.
Moving on to the middle-distance events, Madison Antonino from Pinedale triumphed in the 400 Meters with an impressive time of 1:02.99, and in the longer distances, Emma York from Big Piney wowed the crowd with a 5:47.97 finish in the 1600 Meters.
As for the boys, the 100 Meters saw Cole Rogers of Kemmerer sprint ahead to victory at 11.62 seconds, leaving Brayden Johnson of Baker/Lander in 2nd at 11.76 seconds. Rogers also showcased his prowess in the 200 Meters and 400 Meters, clinching both events.
In the boys’ 1600 Meters, Logan Milek from Lander put on a fantastic performance finishing in 4:49.96, edging out Owen Schultheis of Jackson.
Field Events Steal the Show
The excitement was not only confined to running events! The field events were equally thrilling, with Adelyn Anderson from Lander dominating the shot put with an incredible throw of 44’8.75″. She also excelled in the discus, achieving a phenomenal distance of 142’7.75″. Meanwhile, in the boys’ shot put, Derek Hagler from Kemmerer took the gold with a formidable throw of 45’10.75″.
The sprinters’ charges and the field athletes made for an exhilarating day at the Wind River Icebreaker meet, showcasing the athletic talent present throughout the region.
