Scottsbluff Boys Soccer Secures Sole Victory as Local High School Soccer Season Kicks Off with Mixed Results
This past weekend, the soccer season got underway for the enthusiastic high school teams of Gering and Scottsbluff, and it was certainly a rollercoaster ride for players and fans alike! The weekend featured a total of four teams from our local schools, but unfortunately, their combined record of 1-7 leaves a lot to be desired. The highlight? Only one team managed to snag a win, and that honor goes to the Scottsbluff boys soccer team!
Scottsbluff Boys Show off Their Skills
On Friday, the Scottsbluff boys took to the field and put on quite a show, defeating Cheyenne East with a commanding score of 5-1. What a fantastic way to kick off the season! Leading the charge was superstar Abdul Jallow, who found the back of the net not once but twice during the match. Other standout performances came from Will Green, Juan Zepeda-Jiminez, and Gabe Hernandez-Limon, each contributing to the impressive scoreline. Joey Escamilla Venzor even got in on the action, providing an assist that helped seal the Bearcats’ victory.
Scottsbluff’s defense was no slouch either, as goalkeeper Matthew Hafner was busy making five critical saves to keep Cheyenne East at bay. It’s clear that the boys are off to a strong start, but could they keep the momentum going?
Challenges Ahead for Scottsbluff and Gering
Sadly, Saturday brought a bump in the road for the Scottsbluff boys. They faced Cheyenne Central and, despite their earlier success, found themselves on the wrong end of a 4-1 loss. The bright spot came from Zepeda-Jiminez again, who managed to score a lone goal for the Bearcats. Meanwhile, Gering’s boys soccer team also had a challenging weekend. They suffered a devastating loss in their opening match to Cheyenne Central, finishing with a staggering score of 10-1. The sole goal for Gering was netted by Jhasuel Avila-Sidon, but it wasn’t nearly enough to turn the tide.
Looking ahead, Gering faced yet another tough day on the field with a crushing 14-0 defeat against Cheyenne East the following day. Ouch! The Gering boys are scheduled to regroup and bounce back in their next match over the weekend. Fingers crossed for a better outcome!
Girls Soccer – A Tough Start
Not to be left out, the girls’ soccer teams also jumped into action, and it was equally challenging for them. The Scottsbluff girls played hard but fell to Cheyenne Central with a 2-1 score, allowing a heartbreaking goal in the second half. Then, they faced another intense match against Cheyenne East, ending in a 5-3 loss. On Gering’s side, the girls faced Cheyenne East and lost narrowly with a score of 1-0, before facing another tough defeat against Cheyenne Central, this time 3-0.
But it’s not all doom and gloom! Gering’s girls are gearing up to host Sterling, Colorado, on Thursday, while the boys team is set to take on Holdrege this Saturday. It’s a chance for them to regroup, learn from these early games, and offer better performances.
Upcoming Matches
As for the upcoming matches, both Scottsbluff and Gering soccer teams are set to battle it out against Cheyenne South and Holdrege, respectively. Varsity matches are slated to kick off at 4:30 PM on Tuesday. Let’s hope for some exciting, competitive games that will get the fans cheering and the teams scoring!
A Bright Spot in Girls Tennis
Switching gears a bit, Gering tennis players had a moment of triumph amid the soccer trials. The dynamic doubles team of Nevaeh Guerin and Ashlee Swan finished fifth at No. 1 doubles at the North Platte Doubles Invite. Let’s give a round of applause for their hard work!
With this season just starting, there’s still so much action to come for our local teams! Let’s rally behind them and hope for a turnaround in their upcoming matches!
