Bonners Ferry High School Track and Field Team Gears Up for Action-Packed Season

It’s an exciting time in Bonners Ferry as the Bonners Ferry High School Track and Field team prepares for a competitive season packed with talent and experience. With an impressive roster of 64 athletes, this year’s squad is a mix of returning record-breakers, district champions, and state competitors, each eager to make their mark.

A Season to Remember

While the team’s numbers have decreased from last year’s 85 athletes, the current lineup boasts a wealth of experience. Head coach Travis Hinthorn, a proud Badger alum from the class of 1990, is kicking off his 21st season at the helm of the varsity track and field program, bringing a deep understanding of the sport to the athletes.

Field Events Take Center Stage

This season, the team has a strong emphasis on field events, especially among the girls’ throwers. Leading the charge is senior Helene Rae, who made quite a splash last year by finishing third at state in the shot put with an impressive throw of 41-10.25. Helene’s hard work has already paid off, as she has committed to further her track career at the College of Idaho next year. She’s not alone in her success; the girls’ throwing squad is filled with several promising athletes, ensuring that those field event points will be racked up with authority.

Relay Teams Ready to Compete

The relay teams are another source of excitement for the Badgers. The boys’ team boasts the best district time for the 4x200m relay at 1:35.66, while the girls’ team also showcased their speed last year, clocking the best time for the 4x100m relay at 51.00. Three out of four members of the girls’ 4x100m squad will return, including Makenna Baisden. Makenna had an outstanding season, finishing second at state in the 400m with a personal record of 59.15, which is just half a second shy of the school record. The energy on the track is sure to be thrilling this year!

Coaching Staff Brings Experience

The Badgers are backed by a strong coalition of coaches. With five paid track coaches on board, they are ready to guide the athletes through their journey. One standout addition to the team this year is Morgan Burt, a 2022 Badger alum and state champion pole vaulter, who has come on as a full-time coach. The coaching staff is rounded out by four volunteer coaches, including school resource officer Jason Trujillo, bringing a wealth of wisdom and practical experience to the table.

Exciting Meets Ahead

In the upcoming weeks, the Badgers will host their first duel meet on March 20, followed by a larger 13-team invitational on March 22. Historically, this March invitational has seen some of the best weather for track meets, creating an electric atmosphere for athletes and spectators alike. While the Badgers will only host these two meets, they will compete in the Timberlake invite, considered a crucial barometer for playoff readiness against roughly 30 different schools.

Fundraising for the Future

Travis Hinthorn has also been hard at work with fundraising efforts to upgrade track facilities and equipment, showcasing his commitment to providing the best possible environment for the athletes training to achieve their dreams.

The Bonners Ferry High School Track and Field team is overflowing with talent and hard work this season. With their eyes set on success, it’s bound to be a thrilling journey as they sprint, jump, and throw their way into the competitive season ahead!
