Molly Workman: Record Breaker Unleashed
The spotlight was on Molly Workman as she took to the pool on Saturday, securing a remarkable victory in the 100 freestyle. She didn’t just win the state crown; she set a new PIAA record with a lightning-fast time of 48.85 seconds! This wasn’t her only achievement at the championships. On Friday, she dazzled the crowd by breaking the State High record in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.44 seconds, earning her a shiny gold medal.
As a talented junior, Molly has already verbally committed to the prestigious University of Virginia, which is certain to be thrilled to have her join their swim team. Her father, Coach Aaron Workman, couldn’t be prouder of his daughter’s phenomenal performances, clearly excited about her future.
Sam Huggins: A Senior Leaving His Mark
Not to be outdone, senior swimmer Sam Huggins made headlines of his own at the championship. Last year, Sam was the runner-up in both the 200 and 500 freestyle, so this victory undoubtedly feels sweet for him. He has also committed to swim at the University of North Carolina, where he will continue to chase his swimming dreams. Coach Aaron Workman, who is also Sam’s mentor, believes that Sam’s talent has a very bright future ahead.
Team Success and Participation
The impressive achievements by Molly and Sam contributed to the overall successes of the State College swim teams. The girls’ team finished in a fantastic fifth place overall with a total of 143 points from over 55 competing teams, proving that the future is bright for female swimmers at State College Area High School.
The boys’ team, while placing 15th with 54 points among more than 50 teams, showed promise for the years to come. One highlight was the performance of senior Madison Watschke, who brought home two silver medals in the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke, with impressive times of 2:03.63 and 1:02.54, respectively.
Relay Team Performances and Skills on Display
The relay teams also gave it their all. The girls’ 200 medley relay team, which included Watschke, Workman, sophomore Gabby Siekman, and freshman Isla Reite, swam to a fourth place finish with a time of 1:43.54. In the boys’ competition, Huggins along with his team, which featured junior Leo Garlicki, sophomore Luke Flickinger, and freshman Evan Koehle, finished ninth in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:08.82.
Additionally, the girls finished sixth in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:30.82, showcasing the strength of their lineup.

Sophomore Varrah Gramling and senior Chris Hill participated in the diving competitions, adding depth to their teams.
