Piedmont High School Track and Field Teams Kick Off Season with Impressive Performances
In the charming city of Piedmont, excitement is in the air as the track and field teams have burst onto the scene this season with remarkable performances that have caught the attention of fans and coaches alike. With a mix of seasoned athletes and promising newcomers, this year’s teams are setting the bar high!
Junior Stars Shine Bright
Leading the charge for the girls is junior Skylar Best, who is looking strong and confident as she aims to dominate in middle-distance events. Coach Pouyan Assadi has praised her potential, and there’s a buzz around her upcoming performances. On the boys’ side, senior Sam Shelby has stolen the spotlight by breaking his own school record in the 100 meters. He clocked in a blazing time of 11.05 seconds at the K-Bell Track and Field Classic on March 1, securing the best time of the day!
Looking Ahead to the NCS Meet of Champions
With such an impressive start, Shelby is setting his sights on finishing on the podium at the upcoming North Coast Section Meet of Champions in not just one, but multiple events. He’ll be competing in the 100, 200, and 400 meters, along with various relays. It’s safe to say that he’s on everyone’s radar this season!
Meanwhile, sophomore Sebastien Swain is looking to build on his previous success as well. He raced a fantastic 1:59.15 at the Skyline Invitational earlier this season. Having already made the NCS Meet of Championships in three events last year, he’s ready to make an even bigger impact, especially after achieving personal bests of 1:57.07 in the 800 meters and 4:18.58 in the 1,600 meters.
Fresh Faces Enter the Mix
There are plenty of fresh faces joining the ranks too! Senior Miguel Long is tackling long and triple jumps, hurdles, and has reached over 11 feet in pole vaulting. Keep an eye on rising talents such as junior Maddox Ma and sophomores Eric Venner and Rehan Mumtaz, who are boosting the team’s depth in sprints and relays. Freshman Ian Chung is making waves in distance races with impressive times, including 11 minutes in the two-mile, 5 minutes in the mile, and 2:15 in the 800 meters.
Depth in Girls’ Middle Distances
On the girls’ side, the team has an outstanding depth in middle distances, with seven talented girls running under six minutes in the 1,600 meters. Notably, sophomore Leighton Mand reached a personal record of 5:27.13 at the recent Dan Gabor Invitational on March 1. Not far behind her were junior Skylar Best with 5:45.70 and senior Caroline Taylor with 5:45.92.
Freshman Nikita Gorelik also showcased her talent with a time of 5:46.72. The team is rallying around senior Ella Yasar, who was Piedmont’s only scorer at last year’s Meet of Champions, placing fifth in the 300 hurdles. Another standout is senior Alina Shahid, who is the top thrower on the girls’ team, boasting a personal best discus throw of 97 feet — just shy of the school record. Coach Assadi is honing her skills in hopes of securing a podium spot at the Meet of Champions.
Exciting Prospects in Sprints
Meanwhile, sophomore Claire Aubrecht is leading the sprints with impressive personal bests of 13.14 seconds in the 100 meters and 27.19 seconds in the 200 meters at the Skyline Invitational. The excitement is palpable as the teams consist of approximately 40 varsity boys and 30 varsity girls this season. Collectively, everyone is hopeful for strong performances in dual meets and an increased number of athletes qualifying for postseason meets.
Piedmont’s track and field teams are off to a thrilling start this season, and fans can’t wait to see what unfolds. With such extraordinary talent and determination, it seems they’re poised for a memorable year ahead!
