Get Ready, Sedona! The Red Rock High School Varsity Golf Team is Back in Action for 2025!

Hey there, Sedona! Exciting news is hitting the green as the Sedona Red Rock High School varsity golf team has officially kicked off their 2025 season! The team launched their new campaign at the stunning Agave Highlands Golf Course in nearby Cornville on February 25, 2025. It was an exhilarating match against some tough competitors, including Chino Valley, Holbrook, and Camp Verde.

A Familiar Face in Charge

This year marks the second season for the Red Rock golf program under the guidance of Head Coach Joseph Hazlitt. Last year was a challenge with only five dedicated members, which is right at the brink of the minimum requirement of four players needed to compete. But fear not! This year, the team is already showing signs of improvement thanks to better recruiting efforts and a growing interest in the sport.

Returning Stars and New Faces

Among those returning this season are four key players who are eager to shine on the course again. Carter Pedersen, Lily Williams, Oliver Paydar, and Katrina Le are prepared to take their skills to new heights this season. There’s also fresh talent joining the ranks! The team is buzzing with excitement about the addition of newcomers like Leonard Vandermast and Carden Le, who is actually Katrina’s younger brother. Both are first-generation golfers diving into an exciting sport that many are eager to learn about.

Individual Goals and Team Spirit

Speaking of eager learners, we have Glenna Barnes, a junior and first-time golfer, who is soaking up the sport like a sponge! She finds golf to be a relaxing escape and is focused on personal improvement throughout the season. Then there’s Carter, who is more than just a talented golfer. After graduation, he plans to adventure north as a commercial fisherman in Alaska, but for now, he is focused on refining his golf game. Even though the opening match didn’t go as he hoped, he’s looking forward to enhancing his putting skills as the season progresses.

As for senior golfer Katrina, she’s not only talented but also incredibly smart, with big plans for her future at Northern Arizona University after graduation. Balancing school, golf, and her interests in honors courses and interdisciplinary global programs is no easy feat, but she’s managing it like a pro!

Lily is another player who’s been on an impressive journey. Over the past couple of years, she has made huge strides, going from a score of 85 to a fabulous 52 for nine holes! She’s aiming to drop her score into the 40s this season while focusing on that all-important putting and drive accuracy.

Open Arms for New Players

As the days heat up, so does the enthusiasm for golf! In fact, the team is actively encouraging new players to join. Sign-ups will be open until a couple of weeks before spring break, so if you’ve ever thought about swinging a club, now is the time!

Upcoming Events and Home Match

Mark your calendars, because the first home tournament for the Scorpions is just around the corner! Scheduled for March 5, 2025, at the beautiful Oak Creek Country Club, the team will go head-to-head against Chino Valley and Camp Verde starting at 2:30 p.m. This is a fantastic opportunity for the community to show their support, cheer on the players, and soak up a bit of that glorious Sedona sunshine while enjoying the game.

So there you have it, Sedona! The Red Rock High School varsity golf team is swinging into gear with a renewed spirit and eagerness to expand the game of golf at the school. Let’s get out there and support our Scorpions as they hit the greens!
