Champions Emerge from Immanuel Christian School

In a thrilling display of skill and teamwork, the Immanuel Christian School boys basketball team claimed the coveted state championship title in the Texas Christian Athletic Fellowship. The championship game took place on Saturday, February 23, in Cedar Hill, where the Warriors faced off against Trinity Christian.

With a nail-biting score of 61-49, the Warriors took the victory, displaying impressive teamwork and resolute determination. Jayson Chang proved to be a standout player that day, earning the title of MVP for his outstanding performance on the court. His contributions were instrumental in leading the team to this significant triumph.

Prior to their championship success, the Warriors made their way to the finals by defeating Providence Prep in a close semifinal clash, ending the game at 65-56. Jayson Chang again shone brightly, racking up 18 points in that decisive contest. Alongside him, Noah Ayala was recognized for his skills as he was selected to the All-Tournament squad, further highlighting the talent within the Immanuel Christian School team.

Thunderbirds made a splash at the Class 6A state swimming meet held in Austin. The 200-yard medley relay team, consisting of four talented swimmers—JP Cardenas, Nico Ramirez, Eric Hernandez, and Demian Hidalgo—secured an impressive sixth-place finish with a time of 1:33.29.

Demian Hidalgo also made a notable mark in the individual competitions, ranking 14th in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.01 seconds. JP Cardenas showed his prowess in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing 16th at 51.43 seconds—a commendable performance that demonstrated his hard work and dedication.

El Paso High Shines in Class 5A Competitions

El Paso High School is making strides too! The girls’ relay team showcased their strength in the 200-yard freestyle relay, finishing 13th with a time of 1:53.18. This relay squad included Penelope Reese, Pax Benjamin, Sarah Wallen, and Leila Untereker. They didn’t stop there; the 400-yard freestyle relay team also put up a respectable fight, placing 16th while clocking in at 3:47.37, with the same team members grabbing valuable experience for future competitions.

Basketball Teams Across the Region Excel

The basketball action wasn’t limited to our local high school; the Las Cruces Bulldawgs had a mixed week with a record of 1-1. They faced Hobbs, falling short with a score of 59-29, but bounced back to claim victory against Carlsbad, winning 48-21. Meanwhile, the Mayfield Trojans celebrated a solid win against Silver, topping the game with a score of 55-33.

The Organ Mountain Knights also had a victorious week, winning both their contests against El Paso Da Vinci (66-55) and Clovis (74-53), showcasing their determination and teamwork. The Centennial Hawks battled hard, securing a win against Deming but faced a challenging loss against Carlsbad. Hats off to the Mesilla Valley Christian School, too, which clinched their fourth straight win against Capitan, defeating them 40-32! Nevaeh Benjamin from Mesilla Valley made a mark with an impressive double-double, scoring 18 points and grabbing 14 rebounds.
