Lubbock has made headlines this football season with the recognition of standout players from the South Plains area, as they were featured in the 2024 big-school football Super Team. The selection highlights exceptional talent from Class 4A and larger programs, showcasing individual performances that helped their teams achieve great success.
Leading the way is Holden Phillips, a quarterback from Frenship, who has been named player of the year. Phillips’s impressive statistics include completing 295 of 394 passes, boasting a remarkable 74.9% completion rate, racking up 3,758 yards, and throwing 46 touchdown passes while only throwing eight interceptions. In addition to his passing prowess, he also contributed significantly on the ground, rushing for 711 yards and eight rushing touchdowns.
Another notable player is Jason Stanzione from Seminole, who made an impact on the defensive side of the field. As the district defensive MVP, he recorded a team-high 167 tackles, including 126 solo tackles. He also demonstrated his versatility with three interceptions and two sacks.
Monterey’s resurgence this season is also noteworthy. The Plainsmen earned a share of the district championship, finishing with a solid 7-5 overall record and reaching the area round of the playoffs. This marked their first district title since 2006 and their first postseason victory since 2018. Under head coach Thrash’s guidance, the team bounced back from a challenging 0-10 season in 2022.
Other standout performances include Cedric Ross, who rushed for 2,019 yards and scored 18 touchdowns while Campbell impressed with 81 catches, 1,497 receiving yards, and 18 touchdowns. On the offensive line, Smith earned the title of district offensive lineman of the year, making a significant contribution by recording 83 pancakes and 129 knockdowns.
Overall, the Lubbock area continues to produce outstanding talent in high school football, and with the season just wrapping up, fans are excited about what the future holds for these young athletes.
