Sacramento is reflecting on the remarkable life and legacy of Mike Alberghini, a celebrated football coach whose impact resonated deeply in the community. Alberghini, known affectionately as Coach Al, passed away recently at the age of 78 due to complications from a stroke he suffered in late 2022. He was surrounded by his loving family, including his wife Mary and their children.

Alberghini’s coaching journey at Grant High School spanned nearly five decades, during which he guided the Pacers to unprecedented heights in California high school football. His teams garnered 17 league championships and 7 CIF section titles, with a remarkable record of 282 wins as head football coach. Additionally, he won over 500 games as the head baseball coach. Alberghini’s commitment and drive made him a central figure at Grant, earning him induction into five local and state Halls of Fame, including the California High School Football Hall of Fame.

Alberghini was not just known for his coaching prowess, but also for being a mentor and father figure to countless students. His tough-love approach fostered respect among his players, where they often felt they were playing for something greater than themselves. He encouraged athletes to take pride in being a Pacer and inspired them to stand against bullying.

Many former players and colleagues have praised his legacy, describing him as a legend and a true embodiment of community spirit. Mike Baker, a trustee on the Twin Rivers Unified School District board, expressed deep sorrow over Alberghini’s passing. “It’s a huge loss. They just don’t make legends that touch communities like that,” he stated.

Throughout his life, Alberghini made a significant impact not only on the field but also in shaping the lives of the young men and women he coached. He shared a special bond with his players, often reminding them to embrace leadership and responsibility as representatives of Grant. “Grant kids are my kids,” he said, emphasizing his dedication to his students’ welfare.

His influence extended beyond wins and losses; he was a community pillar who rallied support when tragedy struck, especially during the heartbreaking loss of player J.J. Clavo in 2015. In response to Clavo’s tragic death, the region came together to honor him and support the Grant community, showcasing the strong bonds formed under Alberghini’s leadership.

As Grant continues to thrive, now led by co-coaches Carl Reed and Syd Thompson, Alberghini took pride in watching his former players succeed, often referring to them as his own children. He viewed coaching as not just a profession but a profound responsibility to make a positive impact on young lives.

Coach Alberghini will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to the game, his community, and the countless hearts he touched throughout his illustrious career.
