Mesa – The head football coach at Dobson High School was arrested on campus Thursday morning, according to a statement from school officials. Bill Godsil, who has been with Mesa Public Schools since 2019, was taken into custody by the Surprise Police Department.
Godsil has not only served as the head football coach but also joined the Dobson High School’s baseball coaching staff as a junior varsity coach recently. Additionally, he teaches physical education and works in the credit recovery program, which helps students retake failed classes necessary for graduation.
In a message to families, Principal Gabbi Buckley confirmed the arrest, stating, “Our understanding is the case does not involve Mesa Public Schools students.” She mentioned that Godsil was immediately placed on administrative leave and that the school district is committed to fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation by the Surprise Police Department.
Principal Buckley also noted that Godsil holds a fingerprint clearance card issued by the Arizona Department of Public Safety, which is a requirement for people working in schools. Up until his hire at Dobson, Godsil was the head football coach at Coolidge High School from 2017.
As of now, the Surprise Police Department has not released any further information regarding the reasons for Godsil’s arrest or details about the ongoing investigation.
For updates on the situation, the community is encouraged to stay tuned to official releases from the district and law enforcement.
