Omaha, Nebraska – The excitement in college baseball is heating up as the NCAA Division I baseball tournament is just around the corner. Every spring, teams from across the country compete for a chance to make it to the prestigious Men’s College World Series (MCWS) held here in Omaha. This tournament has come a long way since its inception in 1947 when only eight teams participated.

The current format includes 64 teams that battle through four rounds to finally reach the MCWS. The teams are divided into two groups: the automatic berths, awarded to conference champions, and the at-large selections, which are chosen by the NCAA Division I Baseball Committee. Out of the total, 30 teams earn automatic berths while 34 teams receive at-large bids. Notably, 16 teams are given national seeds and the chance to host a super regional if they advance.

The tournament begins with the Regionals, where 64 teams are split into 16 double-elimination brackets. Each bracket consists of four teams, and a team must lose two games to be eliminated. The Super Regionals follow, where the winners from the Regionals face off in best-of-three series.

Once the eight remaining teams qualify for the MCWS, they are divided into two double-elimination brackets, each containing four teams. The ultimate champions of these brackets will then meet in the MCWS Finals, a final best-of-three series to determine the national champion.

The tournament typically starts in late May or early June, after the regular season wraps up, and concludes with the MCWS in June. The history of this tournament is rich, with the Southern California Trojans leading the way with a record 12 championships, showcasing the competitive spirit and passion that makes college baseball a thrilling experience for players and fans alike.
