Starkville Welcomes New Head Coach John Carr for 2025 Season
Starkville, Mississippi, is set for a new chapter in its high school football program with the appointment of John Carr as head coach for the Yellow Jackets starting in 2025. The Starkville-Oktibbeha County Consolidated School District approved Carr’s hiring on Friday morning, and he is scheduled to meet with the SHS coaching staff and players on Monday.
Carr brings over 30 years of coaching experience to Starkville, having previously led the Clinton High School team to a 4-6 record in his first season. When he took over, the team had faced a tough previous year, finishing 1-9 and averaging just 15 points per game. Under his direction, the Arrows improved significantly, averaging 30 points per game and showing offensive prowess with 345 yards of offense per game, including notable victories over South State champion Brandon and Starkville.
SHS Athletic Director Jay Hopson praised Carr’s offensive abilities, remarking on his success across different levels of football. Hopson stated, “He has a brilliant offensive mind and brings a lot of offensive firepower to the program.”
Carr’s coaching journey includes a wealth of experience at both the high school and collegiate levels. He previously ran the program at Ouachita Parish High School, boasting a 73-27 record. Moreover, as an offensive coordinator in college, his teams consistently ranked among the nation’s best in various offensive categories.
While expressing excitement about his new role, Carr said, “I’m inheriting a good group. Year in and year out, Starkville puts out great talent.” He emphasized the importance of building relationships, accountability, and structure within the program. “I can’t wait to embrace the community, coaching staff, and players,” he added.
This hiring comes on the heels of a major transition for the Jackets, who lost former head coach Chris Jones after a successful spell that included six seasons with 10 or more wins and a state title in 2022. As Starkville moves forward, there is optimism around Carr’s ability to shape the future of the Yellow Jackets’ football program.
