Kansas State Basketball Makes a Case for NCAA Tournament
MANHATTAN — Kansas State basketball is quietly entering the conversation for a potential NCAA Tournament spot following an impressive 81-73 win over No. 17-ranked Kansas on Saturday. This victory at a packed Bramlage Coliseum marks the Wildcats’ fifth consecutive win and brings their overall record to 12-11, including a 6-6 performance in the Big 12 Conference.
As the Wildcats celebrate this momentum, questions arise about whether it’s too late for a tournament bid. Kansas coach Bill Self acknowledged the challenge ahead for K-State but didn’t entirely dismiss their chances. “God, everybody’s a possibility,” Self stated, reflecting on the competitive landscape of the Big 12 Tournament in Kansas City. He added, “They don’t have much margin for error, I wouldn’t think, but if they play that then they’re going to have a chance to win a lot of games.”
Although the Wildcats are riding high, an upcoming matchup against No. 20-ranked Arizona at 7 p.m. on Tuesday presents another significant challenge. Three of K-State’s five recent victories have come against ranked opponents, showcasing their growing strength and potential. Self noted, “That team out there today didn’t look like a 12-11 team,” highlighting their impressive performance.
K-State forward Coleman Hawkins expressed a strong belief in his team’s capabilities, stating, “I feel like we’ve been one. We just haven’t put it together.” He emphasized the progress made during the recent win streak, illustrating their newfound confidence in tournament settings.
Coach Jerome Tang, maintaining a careful perspective, recalled last year when K-State fell short of NCAA qualifications and had to settle for the NIT with a final record of 19-15. He remains optimistic, believing, “I think we’re good enough to win games in the tournament.” Tang added that the focus is on the next game rather than the bigger picture.
Point guard Dug McDaniel, who contributed significantly with 15 points, 11 assists, and six rebounds against Kansas, echoed this sentiment, stating, “The job’s not finished.” He emphasized the importance of staying grounded and continuing to focus on their immediate goals.
With growing anticipation around the Wildcats’ recent performance, all eyes will be on them as they face Arizona next. Their push for the NCAA Tournament continues, and the excitement builds with each win.
