In Sheridan, Indiana, the local high school football program is embarking on a new chapter after a significant change in leadership. For the first time since 1966, Sheridan has appointed a new football coach, Jake Chesney. The announcement was made on Wednesday, officially marking a new era for the Blackhawks.
Chesney, a former player at Sheridan, has been part of the coaching staff for the past two years under Bud Wright, who holds the record as the state’s all-time winningest coach. Wright, who stepped down in December, had an illustrious career, securing 464 victories, primarily at Sheridan. Under his guidance, the program won nine Class A state championships between 1980 and 2007.
Kevin Wright, the coach from Carmel, shared positive remarks about the new coach, stating, “Coach Jake Chesney is an exceptional young coach with the ability to motivate and connect with his players.” He emphasized that as a former player, Chesney deeply understands and values the tradition of Sheridan football.
Chesney, who also played four seasons at Sheridan before continuing his college career at Trine University, where he earned a degree in finance, had shown promise as the associated head coach last season. The selection process for the new coach was thorough, involving two rounds of interviews led by a committee consisting of teachers, administrators, coaches, community members, and former players. The committee aimed to grasp the expectations of parents and players regarding leadership and vision for the future of the program.
Following the interviews, the committee unanimously recommended Chesney for the position. Sheridan’s athletic director, Beth DeVinney, remarked, “Jake has a passion for the game and brings a positive energy to all he does.” She expressed excitement about the potential impact he will have on the program, highlighting his understanding of Blackhawk football.
Chesney will now take charge of a program that finished last season with a 7-6 record. The Sheridan community and players are hopeful for the changes and improvements he will bring as they look toward the future.
