Cedar Grove Names New Head Coach: Rich Freeman Takes Charge
In CEDAR GROVE, Georgia, a fresh chapter has begun for the Cedar Grove Saints as they recently appointed Rich Freeman as their new head coach, following a challenging season that left the program in search of direction. With a notable history of coaching, Freeman arrives after a year at Morehouse College, where he led the team for over 15 years and achieved a balanced record of 75 wins and 75 losses.
Freeman’s arrival comes at a pivotal time for the Saints, who ended last season with a disappointing 3-7 record under former head coach Roderick Moore. Moore took the reins after John Adams, who had led the team to success, departed for a position at Georgia State. Unfortunately, the transition did not go as planned as multiple key players decided to transfer following Adams’ exit, which included standout recruits like Bo Walker and Devin Carter.
Before stepping down from Morehouse in 2022, Freeman made a mark on the program by guiding them to their first-ever NCAA Division II playoff appearance in 2010, just three years into his tenure. Cedar Grove, once a powerhouse with five Class 3A titles from 2016 to 2023, is keen to regain its former glory after experiencing a significant dip in performance.
The Saints have a rich history of producing top talent, and with numerous former players currently on college rosters, the potential for a strong resurgence is high. During the last season, Freeman also served as the defensive coordinator at Drew, a charter school in Atlanta, allowing him to stay engaged in high school football during the transition.
As Cedar Grove welcomes Freeman, hopes are high that his experience and leadership will help revive a once-dominant football program that has the potential to attract top-tier recruits in one of the country’s most talent-rich areas.
