Head Coaching Changes Sweep Oregon High School Football

As the holidays approach, Oregon high school football is experiencing a wave of coaching changes. At least a dozen schools in the state’s top four classifications are now seeking new head football coaches, marking a significant transition period for many programs.

The first to announce his departure was Bob Boyer of Beaverton, who stepped down just a week before his team’s season finale in late October. Following closely behind him, Kevin Bickler, the coach at Southridge, also called it quits after an eight-season tenure that yielded a 22-50 record. His decision was likely influenced by the desire to pursue other opportunities.

Other schools across the state are also feeling the pinch of turnover. Tim Jacobs of Putnam has resigned after eleven seasons of coaching with a 35-60 record. His departure was reportedly motivated by his wish to spend more time with his daughter, Kaia, who recently earned a silver medal competing for Team USA at the Pan-American U15 Youth Championships in Ecuador.

In another notable exit, Mike Mitchell, who was the only coach in the brief history of Caldera, stepped down to take a coaching role with the Frankfurt Galaxy in the European League of Football, which starts its camp in early April.

Meanwhile, in Eastern Oregon, one of the state’s top recruits, wide receiver and defensive back Rasean Jones from Baker, will now have a new coach for his last year of high school as Jason Ramos decided to resign after six seasons, finishing with a 24-30 record.

The list of confirmed coaching openings, according to SBLive Oregon, includes several other schools such as:

  • Crescent Valley: Andrew McClave (6-30 in four seasons)
  • Creswell: Scott Worsham (25-42 in eight seasons)
  • Grants Pass: Brad Page (14-17 in three seasons)
  • Junction City: Max Wall (25-19 in five seasons)
  • Lakeview: Jeff Graham (13-7 in two seasons)
  • McNary: Connor Astley (0-27 in three seasons)
  • Parkrose: Stephen Nesmith (3-24 in three seasons)
  • Umatilla: Steven Williams (1-7 in one season)

With the season wrapped up and the new year on the horizon, schools across Oregon now face the challenge of finding suitable candidates to lead their football programs back to success.
