Coach Set to Return to Kingstree High School Football Program
Kingstree, S.C. – The principal of Kingstree High School, Mark Fraiser, announced in a letter Tuesday that he plans to reinstate former football coach Brian Smith. This decision comes after community outcry led to a petition being created to bring back Smith, who many affectionately refer to as “Smitty.” In his letter, Fraiser expressed a shared commitment with Smith to support both scholars and athletes in achieving their personal and athletic goals.
The petition, which quickly gained traction on social media, was spearheaded by parents, students, and athletes who voiced their frustration regarding Smith’s dismissal. Earlier this week, Smith made it clear that he felt the school’s reasoning for his termination was unjust, stating he didn’t receive a fair explanation.
In a meeting with Principal Fraiser and the school’s athletic director, Smith was informed of the decision but argued back, saying, “You’re a liar,” before walking out. Smith has a rich history in coaching, having spent over 20 years in the profession and more than 10 years in the Williamsburg County School District. He has notably helped 26 athletes secure college scholarships during his tenure. Smith took on the head coach position for Kingstree High School in 2019 when it merged with CE Murray High School.
Fraiser acknowledged the upcoming discussions about Smith’s reinstatement but did not specify a date. He expressed confidence that with this renewed partnership, the school can continue supporting its athletes and ultimately make the community proud. The local community is hopeful as they await the formal reinstatement of Coach Smith.
