Wink, TX — The small town of Wink is in mourning following the tragic death of 17-year-old high school football player Jake Shuler. Shuler died after being involved in a serious crash on Wednesday night, shortly after 8:55 p.m., on North Pyote Street, as reported by the Winkler County Sheriff’s Office.

Emergency services responded quickly to the scene of the accident in the 600 block of North Pyote Street. Both the Winkler County Sheriff’s Office and Winkler County EMS did their best to perform life-saving measures on Shuler before he was transported to Medical Center Hospital in Odessa. Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries two days later, on Friday.

In a touching statement shared on social media, Jake’s family expressed their heartache as well as their pride in his decision to be an organ donor. They wrote, “Without hesitation, our sweet angel boy checked that box.” They find comfort knowing that he has joined his late grandfather, with the belief that “they are dancing with Jesus.” The family conveyed their deep appreciation for the overwhelming support they have received from the community during this difficult time.

In light of this tragedy, the basketball game scheduled for Friday night between Iraan and Wink has been postponed out of respect for Jake and his family. The Winkler County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the details surrounding the crash.

As the community gathers to remember a young life full of potential, Jake Shuler’s family promises to share funeral arrangements as soon as they are finalized. In their words, “We love you all.”
