MONTGOMERY — Football fans and high school athletes alike are awaiting an important announcement regarding the future of the Super 7 Championships. A decision will come “really soon,” according to AHSAA executive director Heath Harmon. The AHSAA is currently considering four locations to host these prestigious championships: Protective Stadium in Birmingham, ASU Stadium in Montgomery, Hancock Whitney Stadium in Mobile, and Veteran’s Memorial Stadium at Troy University.
As of now, the AHSAA has taken site visits to each of the proposed venues but has not provided the cities with any updates on when a final decision will be made. Harmon expressed his appreciation for the interest shown by each location, indicating that they all have unique advantages. He stated, “We’re looking for the best possible experience we can provide for our member schools and our student-athletes that make it to these events.”
This year’s Super 7 Championships are set to be held in December at Protective Stadium in Birmingham. However, the AHSAA is looking ahead to future championships spanning from 2025 to 2034. The rotation of venues has changed in recent years, with Auburn and Tuscaloosa exiting the agreement due to changes in college football playoff structures.
Harmon has not shown a clear preference between hosting the Super 7 at one single site or rotating among multiple sites. “I know that there are probably benefits to both of those,” he noted, as he evaluates options for the championships’ future.
The anticipation builds as the announcement date approaches, and the chosen site will play a significant role in shaping the experience for the teams, volunteers, and fans who look forward to this annual showcase of high school football talent.
