Altadena Community Unites After Tragic Eaton Fire

In Altadena, the impact of the recent Eaton Fire has deeply affected the community, especially for Zaire Calvin, a beloved high school football coach and lifelong resident. The devastating blaze forced many residents to evacuate their homes, and tragically, it claimed the life of Calvin’s sister, Evelyn McClendon.

On the night of January 7, Calvin faced a heart-wrenching decision as he grabbed his 1-year-old daughter and raced to safety. While escaping, he desperately called out for his sister, who lived nearby, hoping she would make it out in time. Sadly, McClendon was unable to evacuate, and Calvin has been left grappling with unimaginable grief.

Calvin shared with the media, “I don’t even know how to talk about it. She couldn’t get out.” After returning to his neighborhood, all that remained was rubble, with McClendon’s car still parked in front of her home, a haunting reminder of the night’s events. It was later that a cousin discovered her remains while searching through the debris.

Despite his painful loss, Calvin has found solace in the support of his community. “The grace of God and the support of family and everyone who’s been through these tragedies have come out in droves to support each other,” he expressed. The local community, particularly those from his Oaks Christian family, have provided generous assistance during this trying time.

Moving forward, Calvin is focused on rebuilding and encourages his community to hold on to their homes. “Just as long as we stick together and do not sell – please, keep your homes,” he implored. “My Altadena community, fight for everything, God will make a way.”

In these challenging times, Calvin also encourages those wishing to help him to contribute to his nonprofit organization, which aims to support those impacted by the fire and help foster community resilience.

As Altadena continues to heal from this tragedy, Calvin’s message of unity and strength resonates as a reminder that together, the community can overcome even the toughest challenges.
