Johnny Millard Steps Down as Monte Vista Football Coach
Danville — In a surprising move, Johnny Millard announced on Wednesday that he is stepping down as the head football coach at Monte Vista High School after dedicating three seasons to the program. The announcement was made on social media platform X, where Millard expressed that the decision was far from easy. “This decision was not easy,” he wrote, “as my time with this program has truly been one of the most rewarding and meaningful experiences of my life.”
During Millard’s tenure, the Mustangs faced a challenging start, missing the North Coast Section playoffs in his first two years. However, the team showed improvement in his third season, finishing the regular season with a record of 5-5. They made it to the playoffs but were eliminated in a nail-biting overtime game against Bishop O’Dowd, losing 31-28 in the first round of the Division II playoffs.
This past fall, Millard had a talented roster that featured standout players like Washington-bound running back Julian McMahan and tight end Kellan Ford, who has committed to Arizona. In his farewell message, Millard took the time to thank his players, assistant coaches, the parents, school administrators, and even the band and cheer squad for their support. “My decision comes from the need to focus more on my growing family, who have been my rock and my greatest source of joy,” he stated. “They’ve sacrificed so much so I could pour my heart into this role, and it’s time for me to give that energy back to them.”
Millard, who was a standout player at nearby Foothill, leaves the program with an overall record of 11 wins and 20 losses. His contributions will certainly be remembered by those who had the pleasure of working with him and witnessing the growth of the Mustangs during his coaching career.
